Silicon Nanowire Transistor Fabricated by AFM Nanolithography

Silicon nanowire transistor (SiNWT) is a new promising alternative architecture to the conventional planar technology for electronic device fabrication. In this invention, SiNWT is fabricated via formation of a nanoscale silicon oxide pattern on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer using an atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanolithography. The AFM nanolithography technique is advantageous due to the imaging capability of AFM and the ability to write various patterns by controlling the probe movement over the sample surface. In AFM nanolithography, the force between the tip and sample surface is held constant while a fixed voltage bias is applied to generate the field-emitted current. To fabricate SiNWT pattern by AFM nanolithography, applied voltage between tip and sample surface, tip writing speed and environment humidity are controlled. Our SiNWT is consisted of a silicon nanowire as a channel with a set of source (S) and drain (D) pads. A lateral gate (G) pad is connected by another nanowire made to be as close as possible to the channel in the transistor structure. The fabrication process steps are including a SOI wafer preparation, patterning of a silicon nanowire transistor structure on SOI wafer by AFM nanolithography, and the etching processes of silicon layer and oxide patterns.

Upacara penuh adat istiadat itu disaksikan oleh Pemaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah dan Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak serta bekas perdana menteri Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi dan Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Upacara itu yang diadakan di Balairong Seri Istana Negara bermula tepat 9.30 pagi dengan penerimaan surat cara pelantikan oleh Muhyiddin selaku Timbalan Perdana Menteri.

I receipt a sanggar sanjung award for Journal Publication category presented by D.Y.M.M Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Binti Al-Marhum Tengku Adul Rashid (Raja Perempuan Perlis) during The Sanggar Sanjung Award Night 2008 ceremony held at Equatorial Hotel, Penang last night (24 March 2009, 8 - 11 PM). This is my third sanggar sanjung award since 2005. I miss only 2006 award.

The Sanggar Sanggung Award is a recognition confererred by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to its academic staff who have enhanced USM's reputation by attaining excellence in research and academic activities annually. The formal evening, in which the awards are presented, is one of the most prominent events held by the university (USM).

Commencing in 2001, staff who have succeeded in producing an innovative product, published an internationally acclaimed and peer reviewed publication or who are recipients of awards at international or national level are feted at a glitzy gala event tagged the Sanggar Sanjung Night.

Obama, Clinton discussed secretary of state job

U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton left the door open to becoming secretary of state on Friday, a day after a meeting with President-elect Barack Obama at which a Democratic official said they discussed the job.

Obama's selection of Clinton would be a bold move that would bring into his coming administration a high-profile former rival who had questioned his level of experience and his foreign policy ideas in the Democratic primary battle earlier this year.

In introductory remarks at a speech in Albany, New York, Clinton, wife of former President Bill Clinton, did not confirm or deny that she had a secret meeting with Obama on Thursday. Democratic officials said the meeting did take place. "I'm not going to speculate or address anything about the president-elect's incoming administration. And I am going to respect his process and any inquiries should be directed to his transition team," Clinton said.

The Obama's transition office in his hometown Chicago refused to comment. The Washington Post, meanwhile, said Obama met on Friday with another former rival, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, and that they talked about the secretary of state position.

A Democratic official told Reuters that Clinton and Obama "had a serious meeting but the question was whether an actual offer was made." CNN quoted Democratic sources as saying Obama and Clinton had a serious discussion to gauge her interest in becoming secretary of state and that she left the meeting with the impression the job was hers if she wanted it.

Nominating Clinton for the job would be a dramatic step by Obama as he seeks to build a high-powered team in Washington. He defeated the New York senator in a sometimes bitter duel for the presidential nomination, then miffed her supporters by not choosing her as his vice presidential running mate.
Obama also scheduled a meeting in Chicago on Monday with Republican Sen. John McCain, their first face-to-face talks since Obama defeated him in the presidential election on Nov. 4.
Obama spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said Obama and McCain would discuss ways to bring about a "more effective and efficient federal government." McCain had campaigned on reforming government by cutting out programs and reducing spending.

WOULD CLINTON TAKE THE JOB?
Washington was abuzz with the news that Clinton might be on Obama's short list and be a member of a "team of rivals" in much the same way Abraham Lincoln consolidated power by bringing his opponents into his Cabinet.
Many experts thought she would be a strong choice for secretary of state -- she would be the third woman to hold the job after Madeleine Albright and Condoleezza Rice.
"You need someone who can be taken seriously internationally, who has that kind of experience and policy ability, but also has the gravitas to make people sit down at the table," Democratic strategist Liz Chadderdon said.
But the question was whether she would take the job if offered. An alternative could be to remain in the Senate and use her clout to have a say in Obama's proposals and keep an independent platform for another possible run for president.
There were also questions about how her spotlight-loving husband would be managed if his wife were the top diplomat.
Obama has already turned to many former members of Bill Clinton's administration for help in his transition to power, including his chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, and co-chairman of his transition team, John Podesta.
Considering Clinton for secretary of state would mean Obama was expanding his search beyond other candidates mentioned for the job, such as Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, a Democrat who lost the 2004 presidential election to George W. Bush; Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, a Republican who backed Obama over McCain this year; and Richardson, who was the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations during Bill Clinton's presidency.
Obama has been closeted all week in meetings in his transition office in Chicago as he prepares to take over the presidency on Jan. 20.
New Jersey Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine said on MSNBC that Clinton would be great as secretary of state.
"She probably knows every major foreign leader. There's already a relationship where she can sit and talk directly about the problems that exist either on a bilateral or multilateral basis," he said.
Corzine would not address speculation that he is a candidate to be Obama's Treasury secretary, amid reports that another candidate for the position, Lawrence Summers, was fading due to opposition from women's groups upset at him during his tenure as president of Harvard University.

Malaysian government granted USM apex status

PUTRAJAYA: Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has been granted apex status and hundreds of millions of ringgit in additional funding to transform it into Malaysia's first world-class university.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said that both quantitative and qualitative criteria were used to select USM under the accelerated programme for excellence (apex).

"The selection committee evaluated each university's state of readiness, transformation plan and preparedness for change."After a thorough evaluation, the committee decided that only one university truly met all the criteria, namely USM,'' said Khaled Wednesday in a press conference at his ministry.

The Cabinet agreed to the decision at its meeting on Aug 27.The university given apex status is one that has the greatest potential among Malaysian universities to be world-class, and as such, would be given additional assistance to compete with top-ranked global institutions, added Khaled.

With apex status, USM will be expected to move up the World University Rankings with a target of top 200 in five years' time and top 100, if not top 50, by 2020, he said. In last year’s Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings, Universiti Malaya (UM) was the highest ranked Malaysian university at 246, followed by USM at 307, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) at 309 and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) at 364.

A selection committee headed by former Universiti Malaysia Sarawak vice-chancellor Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Mohamad Zawawi Ismail short-listed USM, UM, UKM and UPM.USM's transformation plan, entitled Transforming Higher Education For A Sustainable Tomorrow focused, among other things, on diagnostics, medical biotechnology, waste management, pharmaceuticals, nano technology, carbon nanotube, membrane technology and vaccinology.

"I hope the apex status will spur other universities to strive for excellence too. It's not about selecting the oldest university but choosing one with a doable plan that can help us transform our higher education,'' said Khaled when asked why UM was not selected. The other universities that applied for apex status were International Islamic University Malaysia, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Petronas and Universiti Tenaga Nasional. Khaled said that two more apex institutions would be selected among centres of excellence and newer, more specialised universities.

SPM & AFM

Scanning Probe Microscopy comprises a family of techniques in which a sharp probe is precisely scanned across a surface. Atomic Force Microscopy is one example.

AFM can be used to solve processing and materials problems in a wide range of technologies, such as abrasion, adhesion, cleaning, corrosion, etching, friction, lithography, and polishing for materials, such as polymers, semiconductors, ceramics, glass, metals, composites, biomaterials, paper, pulp, magnetic and electronic materials.

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) is the original scanning probe technique. Because STM requires a conductive surface, its applications are somewhat limited. STM is useful in industry for examining carbon materials.

Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) shows the fine details of bit and domain structure on media, as well as the magnetic fields emanating from operating recording heads. Also shows domain structure in new magnetic materials.

Electric force microscopy distinguishes fixed charges, conductive and insulating regions and identifies short and open circuits.

Surface potential imaging (Scanning Kelvin probe) distinguishes materials based on the work function and related electronic properties. For example, the data marks in CD-RW (rewritable compact disc) are amorphous spots surrounded by crystalline regions of the quaternary alloy AgInSbTe.

Super Dielectric Materials

Super-K CCTO

Super-k CCTO is the newest electroceramic material with unusual dielectric properties ever found. CCTO means a ceramic compound of CaCu3Ti4O12 and Super-k was named after its shows a colossal dielectric constant with relative permittivity or k-value up to 12,000 (for comparison, k-value of air is ~ 1). This permittivity value is much higher if compared to the other electroceramic materials and remains relatively stable over a wide range temperature. The higher the dielectric constant, the more charge can store, and we can make the smaller electronic devices. Therefore, the Super-k CCTO is very useful for microelectronics and microwave devices applications such as to miniaturize memory devices (high-permittivity DRAM) as well as oscillators, filters, phase shifters and antennas.

Semiconductor devices are electronic components that exploit the electronic properties of semiconductor materials (principally Si, Ge, and GaAs). Six Sigma - What is Six Sigma?

Six Sigma at many organizations simply means a measure of quality that strives for near perfection. Six Sigma is a disciplined, data-driven approach and methodology for eliminating defects (driving towards six standard deviations between the mean and the nearest specification limit) in any process - from manufacturing to transactional and from product to service.

The statistical representation of Six Sigma describes quantitatively how a process is performing. To achieve Six Sigma, a process must not produce more than 3.4 defects per million opportunities. A Six Sigma defect is defined as anything outside of customer specifications. A Six Sigma opportunity is then the total quantity of chances for a defect.

The fundamental objective of the Six Sigma methodology is the implementation of a measurement-based strategy that focuses on process improvement and variation reduction through the application of Six Sigma improvement projects. This is accomplished through the use of two Six Sigma sub-methodologies: DMAIC and DMADV.

The Six Sigma DMAIC process (define, measure, analyze, improve, control) is an improvement system for existing processes falling below specification and looking for incremental improvement.

The Six Sigma DMADV process (define, measure, analyze, design, verify) is an improvement system used to develop new processes or products at Six Sigma quality levels. It can also be employed if a current process requires more than just incremental improvement.

General Electric, one of the most successful companies implementing Six Sigma, has estimated benefits on the order of $10 billion during the first five years of implementation. GE first began Six Sigma in 1995 after Motorola and Allied Signal blazed the Six Sigma trail. Since then, thousands of companies around the world have discovered the far reaching benefits of Six Sigma.
